Bruxism

What It Is and How It Can Be Treated

Bruxism, commonly known as teeth grinding or clenching, is a parafunctional habit in which a person clenches or grinds their teeth, either during the day or, more commonly, while sleeping. It is a very common condition that can affect both children and adults, often without them being aware of it.

What Are the Causes?
Bruxism can be associated with various factors, including:
  • Stress and anxiety
  • Bite or occlusal abnormalities
  • Sleep disorders
  • Certain habits or excessive consumption of caffeine and alcohol
What Are the Symptoms?
  • Teeth grinding or clenching
  • Jaw or facial muscle pain
  • Headaches, particularly in the morning
  • Tooth wear and/or tooth sensitivity
  • Pain or discomfort in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ)
What Are the Consequences?

If left untreated, bruxism may cause:

  • Significant enamel wear
  • Chipped or cracked teeth and fillings
  • Jaw pain and, in some cases, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction
How Is Bruxism Treated?

Treatment is individualized according to the underlying cause and severity of the condition. It may include:

  • A night guard (occlusal splint) to protect the teeth
  • Stress management and improved sleep habits
  • Orthodontic or restorative treatment, when necessary
