Post-Tooth Extraction Instructions

Wound Care

• Bite down firmly on the gauze for approximately 1 hour.
• Do not smoke for at least 12 hours.

Bleeding

• A small amount of bleeding or blood-tinged saliva is normal.
• Do not spit and do not use a straw.
• If bleeding continues, place a clean, damp gauze over the area and bite down firmly for 30 minutes.
• When sleeping, keep your head elevated by using several pillows.

Pain & Medication

• Mild pain or discomfort is normal.
• Take your prescribed medication with water and a small amount of food.
• Avoid alcohol while taking medication.

Diet

• Once the gauze has been removed, you may eat normally, but cold and soft foods are recommended during the first hours.

Oral Hygiene

• Do not rinse your mouth or brush your teeth during the first 8 hours.
• Afterwards, rinse gently with salt water and brush carefully, avoiding the extraction area.

Swelling

• Some swelling is normal during the first 2 days.
• Apply an ice pack externally in cycles of 10 minutes on and 10 minutes off.

Rest

• Avoid strenuous physical activity for at least 12 hours.

Other Normal Reactions

• Minor bruising: usually subsides gradually.
• Difficulty opening the mouth: generally improves within a few days.

Stitches

• If stitches have been placed, they are usually removed after 7–8 days, unless dissolvable sutures have been used.

Contact Your Dentist If:

• Pain does not improve with medication.
• Bleeding does not stop despite applying firm pressure with gauze.
• Swelling increases after the third day.
• You develop a fever or have any questions or concerns.
